YOU ARE A SINGER, SONGWRITER, AND COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST.

YOU ARE NIGERIAN, AND NOW RESIDING IN SASKATCHEWAN. WHAT WAS YOUR UPBRINGING INTO THE MUSIC WORLD? WHAT MOMENTS IN YOUR LIFE HELPED PROPEL YOUR AMBITION TO CONTINUE TO CREATE MUSIC FOR YOURSELF?

ADEOLUWA: I have been singing all my life. Ever since I can remember, my parents always had gospel music playing all over our house and growing up I was always in the choir at different stages in my life. In high school, I took a music class and that was the first time I was able to record a song that I wrote. It was a defining moment for me because something about hearing my voice singing the words I had written gave me such a rush. Although I had written a couple of songs at that time, I wrote more poetry. However, after that experience, I began to turn my poems into music. In my final year in high school, I released my debut E.P., Saved By the Sound which really inspired me to keep on chasing my music dream. After releasing my E.P.,  in the States I moved back to Nigeria and I had a bit of a hard time finding my ground musically. By 2018, I was coming out of the longest relationship I had ever been in which inspired me to pour out my heart and soul into my debut album, After Bells and Whistles. The album is a major moment for me because I had to fight through so many insecurities to achieve and when I did my ambition for creating music for myself entered a new phase of strength. I became unstoppable.

“I WILL NEVER TURN DOWN AN OPPORTUNITY TO PUT ON A SHOW”

– ADEOLUWA

YOU ARE A GENRE-BENDING ARTIST.

YOU TAKE INFLUENCE FROM MANY AREAS OF YOUR LIFE AND TRANSFER THOSE TASTES INTO YOUR SOUND. WHAT INFLUENCES HAVE HELPED YOU FIND DIRECTION IN YOUR MUSIC? WHAT LOCAL ARTISTS HAVE HELPED PAVE A WAY FOR YOU?

.

ADEOLUWA: Nigerian Gospel music was my first introduction to loving performing music. Performing is my favourite thing about being an artist and it keeps me going. I will never turn down an opportunity to put on a show. The only thing that comes as easy to me is breathing. I am also influenced by Western pop music, Broadway and musicals, especially the works of artistes like ASA, Adekunle Gold, Stephen Schwartz, Ric Hassani, Brymo, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Dunsin Oyekan, Jonathan McReynolds, The Black Crowes, and Steven Tyler. The local Saskatchewan/Canadian artistes that inspire me are  Dione Taylor, TOVA, K-Anthony, Daniel Caesar, Melodna, Zweii, Oboise, Jessie Reyez,  Tome, and Joni Mitchell.

YOU HAD AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY IN EARLY 2021.

ON JANUARY 24TH 2021, THE LONG-AWAITED SASKATCHEWAN MUSIC AWARDS PREMIERED. YOU WERE ONE OF FEW TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM FOR THIS AWARD SHOW. THE OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM IS AMAZING, AND YOU EVEN KICKED OFF THE NIGHT ALONGSIDE MERV XX GOTTI AND YOUR BAND. HOW DID THAT OPPORTUNITY COME TO BE? AND HOW DID IT FEEL TO SEE YOUR NAME NEXT TO SO MANY IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN THE SASKATCHEWAN MUSIC SCENE?

ADEOLUWA: This was insane! It was such a great way to begin the year! The good people over at the SMAs reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in performing one of my  songs even with so many COVID restrictions. It was a no-brainer for me. I work so hard to promote my music as an independent musician and moments like these when your hard work is recognized don’t come around a lot. Even though I did not take home any of my nominations, I was overjoyed just to be able to share my music. We had such a little time to put the show together but i am proud of what we were able to accomplish. It was also my very first paid gig as an artist after all these years of making music. I will never forget it and I will always be grateful to be recognized amongst many of the important musicians pushing the Saskatchewan music scene forward.

ON JULY 23RD 2021, THE ‘ALL FOR YOU’ EP WILL BE RELEASED.

WHAT WAS THE PROCESS OF CREATING THIS WORK? ANY MAJOR INFLUENCES DURING THE PROCESS OF WRITING? ANYTHING WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS RELEASE?

ADEOLUWA: The EP has been a year in the making. I have grown so much as a person and a musician in the past year and this body of work is reflective of that. Like all my releases, this one also tells a story. It begins with the angst and anger of love lost and swiftly enters a new dimension of meeting a new love that is so unreal, it’s ethereal. The journey from love lost to newfound love to love that’s here to stay is something I experienced as I was creating the project and felt compelled to share with my listeners. The songs on this project have evolved as I have evolved and as a result has gone through many versions before arriving at the sounds you now hear on the project. I was listening to so many different types of music while making this project and I know you will hear that in it. This has to be the most experimental and diverse body of work I have released ever. With this project, I took a step closer into the sphere of genre-bending and I loved it. Sonically, this project is probably my most theatrical as I make sure that every song takes the listener to the place I was feeling when I made it. I am a huge fan of collaboration and I was able to work with the best of the best to make the project complete. I am so proud of this E.P. and I truly hope everyone gets to experience it in its most authentic form.

“THE SONGS ON THIS PROJECT HAVE EVOLVED AS I HAVE EVOLVED”

– ADEOLUWA

YOU HAVE BEEN FOCUSED IN 2021

NOT LETTING ANYTHING GET IN THE WAY OF YOUR MUSIC AND PERFORMANCES. WHAT WERE THE SILVER LININGS FOR YOU DURING THE PANDEMIC? WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST IN 2021 AND THE FUTURE? DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR MORE MUSIC AND PERFORMANCES?

ADEOLUWA: Creating music and strategizing about how to take my craft to the next level. I am a big planner. Everything from my music to my social media content is a result of months and months of planning and tweaking and finessing. I love making music and the pandemic gave me an opportunity to rethink my approach to my artistry and highlight the areas I wanted to improve on. I am looking forward to more live performances. I have so many ideas and concepts for shows that Canadians have never experienced. I am currently working my butt off to make that a reality. I am always working on music and I currently have a number of features in the work. I know now that I am more powerful than I can even contain and I am ready for my work to show that to the world.
