WHAT IS PULSE?
Pulse Music Journal is Saskatchewan’s hub for music indulgers. We ‘eat/sleep/breathe’ the music and entertainment industry – plug into our outlet while we highlight new music, recap live performances, interview the biggest names, connect with local legends, and the newest initiatives surrounding our local music scene. We are honoured to be a leading cultural staple in the Saskatchewan music and entertainment scene.
WE SUPPORT SASKATCHEWAN’S ENTERTAINMENT & MUSIC SCENE
Whether it’s reaching out to a newly released project, musician or creating a spotlight for local talent to be heard on any of our stages, as well as opportunities to be heard opening for larger acts on a full-venue stage. We look forward to assist and launch newest concepts that strongly support the local music in this province. The local music scene is super important to us – we are a small province, but we have big dreams. Let’s grow and support each other – putting Saskatchewan on the map for premium music and entertainment experience.
MAKING LIGHT WHILE IT IS DARK
Joanne Genest, Kimberley Stevens, and Kevin Stevens make up the rock trio called Seven Mile Sun. The band is known for their hard-edge blues fused rock n roll. Joanne, Kimberley, and Kevin grew up in small town Saskatchewan, and spent a large portion of their lives around music in some way. Kimberley and Kevin are siblings and Joanne is their long time friend. After performing as a sibling band for years, they decided they need another piece to the band. Seven Mile Sun is relatively new to the scene, but their roots run deep in the Saskatchewan Music Scene. They took some time during the pandemic to turn the ‘darkness into light’ and they are pleased to celebrate their debut EP release on Friday June 25th 2021. Congratulations to you three, and we know things are looking extra bright on your horizon.
Seven Mile Sun sits down to discuss how the 3-piece was formed, how they decided on their name, and how they would describe their sound. We chat about their small town roots in Harris, Saskatchewan, as well as their upbringing as musicians and what shaped their stage presence. We learn about how they decided on now to release their debut EP with the help from Aspen Beveridge at Skullcreek Studios. They share the themes of the EP, and what they want their fans to take away from the EP. Seven Mile Sun has plans after ‘Light In The Dark’ releases on June 25th 2021. We learn about who they would like to share the stage with locally and their big name bucket list. All of that and so much more.
SEVEN MILE SUN CONSISTS OF THREE MEMBERS
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND? HOW DID THE BAND FORM?
KEVIN OF SEVEN MILE SUN: Our band consists of my sister Kimberley Stevens on drums/vocals, our long time friend Joanne Genest on bass/vocals, and myself, Kevin Stevens on guitar and lead vocals. Our band was formed originally by my sister and I, starting out as a two piece performing mostly for our parents. We had jammed with Joanne a few times, and having her sit in brought another element to the band that we soon realized was the missing piece we had been looking for. I would describe our sound as hard-edged, blues based, keep it simple good old fashioned rock and roll. Simplicity is underrated in modern music, songs don’t have to be complicated, it mostly just muddy’s up the sound.
“THE NAME ENCOMPASSES OUR ROOTS, OUR HOME, WHERE THE WORK HAPPENS, AND WHERE WE STARTED”
– SEVEN MILE SUN
PREVIOUSLY KNOWN AS ‘BETTER THAN NOTHING’
WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT TO REBRAND YOUR NAME? WHAT DOES THE CHANGE MEAN FOR THE BAND?
KIMBERLEY OF SEVEN MILE SUN: Our previous name was comprised in a last minute pinch the night before auditions for ‘The Duo’ in 2013 – our first gig in the ‘big city’. It didn’t hold much meaning for us, but worked for what we were doing playing cover shows with a small mix-in of original music. We had always tossed ideas around for a name rebrand, but the change seemed intimidating and never felt like the right time. Once COVID initially hit and we were all in quarantine, we decided it was the right time for change and a fresh start. We decided to focus on our own original music, and haven’t turned back since.
Seven Mile Sun stems from where Kevin and Kimberley grew up – a farm 7 miles from the closest town of Harris, where Joanne originates. This is still our jam space and where Kev and Kim were heavily influenced by classic rock. Every drive to or from band practice gives the best view of the sunset, and is a pretty amazing part of living in Saskatchewan. The name encompasses our roots, our home, where the work happens, and where we started.
“LIGHT IN THE DARK COVERS A WIDE RANGE OF EMOTIONS AND INSPIRATION”
– SEVEN MILE SUN
GROWING UP IN A SMALL TOWN – HARRIS, SASKATCHEWAN.
HOW HAS YOUR UPBRINGING HELPED SHAPE YOUR MUSIC AND ON-STAGE CHEMISTRY?
JOANNE OF SEVEN MILE SUN: There are fewer entertainment options for a child growing up in a rural area. Discovering ways to amuse yourself sparks creativity. We have all been members of a killer air band at one time or another!
While everyone does indeed know your business in a tight knit community, you are living amongst people who are incredibly supportive. Friends are family and family are friends in our area and in our band. Knowing so many people have our backs has given us the confidence that makes creating and performing pure joy. The 3 of us have known each other forever, and we have all been musically involved with each other in some way or another all along. Although the odd drum stick goes flying across the room with Kevin and Kimberley being siblings, our practices and usually half spent trying to make each other laugh and messing around. Life is too serious.

LEADING UP TO THE RELEASE OF YOUR DEBUT EP ‘LIGHT IN THE DARK’.
YOU HAVE RELEASED “THE RIDE”, “CAN’T COMPROMISE”, AND “GOODBYE”. IT HAS BEEN SO INSPIRING WATCHING YOU GROW, AND RELEASE MUSIC LEADING UP TO YOUR DEBUT RELEASE. WHY DID IT FELL LIKE THE RIGHT TIME TO RELEASE YOUR EP? WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR FANS TO TAKE AWAY FROM THIS RELEASE?
KEVIN FROM SEVEN MILE SUN: We felt the timing was right to release the EP because as the title hints, this project was a bright spot for us in a gloomy time. As we come out of this crazy period in our lives, we want people to see and hear what kept us staying positive throughout the pandemic. (Plus we are at work on our next project already and want to keep the ball rolling!) If there’s anything we want fans to take away from this release (other than some blown car door speakers) it’s finding something within the EP you can relate to. Whether it’s heartbreak, loss, love or lust, Light In The Dark covers a wide range of emotions and inspiration.
WITH THE RETURN OF LIVE MUSIC ON THE HORIZON.
WHAT ACTS DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO SHARING THE STAGE WITH?
KEVIN FROM SEVEN MILE SUN: We honestly cannot wait to hit the stage again. We have always loved performing live and feeling one with the audience. We would love to hit the stage with local acts like League Of Wolves, The Pistolwhips, W3apons. And some dream acts to share a room with would be Rival Sons, Beaches, The Glorious Sons, The Blue Stones, we could go on and on!
WITH YOUR EP OUT, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM SEVEN MILE SUN FOR THE REST OF 2021?
KIMBERLEY OF SEVEN MILE SUN: We are currently planning our first show back for July 23, pending the hopeful lift of restrictions. Details to come!! We hope to play some shows around Saskatoon this summer, and cannot WAIT to hit the stage and see all of our new and OG fans in the audience.
We have been back in the studio recently with Aspen Beveridge at Skullcreek Studios working on some juicy new music, and we’ve got more studio time booked in July to lay down the material we have been working on behind the scenes.
