KATELYN LEHNER’S DEBUT WITH “RED” WAS WORTH THE WAIT

Katelyn Lehner is the next Country Music Star to come out of Saskatchewan. A singer, songwriter and a top-tier athlete, Katelyn’s drive for success has translated from the track to the stage. She had her start in the Saskatchewan music scene at a very young age and now with her debut single “Red”, she is ready to take the world by storm. She has been making connections with producers from Canada to Nashville, and her streaming profiles are already showing success with the debut track. Take a listen for yourself, “Red” is available all streaming platforms now.

Katelyn Lehner chats with us about her introduction to music, the correlation of perfectionism on the track and on the stage, how she got the attention from a Nashville Producer, her appearance on Quarantunes Livestream by The Get Up and Coors Event Centre, her newly released single “Red”, what’s next for Katelyn Lehner, and so much more.

YOUR INTEREST IN MUSIC CAME EARLY IN LIFE.

HOW OLD WERE YOU? AND WHAT INSPIRED YOUR NEED TO PERFORM?

KATELYN LEHNER: I was 3 years old when I performed on stage for the first time. I was the starring role of the Christmas tree in my preschool Christmas concert! From a young age, I loved singing in front of an audience. I used to watch Shania Twain and Britney Spears performing on TV in huge arenas and thought to myself “I want to do that.” I had so much fun at every talent show and competition I did. I took every performance very seriously and wanted to be the best I could be and entertain whoever was in the crowd.

YOU GREW UP COMPETING IN BOTH MUSIC AND SPORT.

WHAT DO YOU LEAN TOWARDS – PERFECTIONISM OR ARE YOUR JUST COMPETITIVE IN SPIRIT WHEN YOU ARE FOCUSED ON YOUR PASSIONS?

KATELYN LEHNER: I definitely strive for perfection. You need to be extremely precise in Track and Field. I have won jump competitions by 1cm and lost races by 0.01 of a second. A small mistake can mean the difference of a gold medal or making a team. Whether I’m at the start line or backstage, I want to be able to perform to the best of my ability. With track, I’m dialed in and focused on what needs to be done. With music, I’m more relaxed and ready to have fun on stage.

WHILE PURSUING YOU KINESIOLOGY DEGREE, YOU OFTEN PERFORMED DURING SPORTING EVENTS.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO CONTRIBUTE TO BOTH OF YOUR PASSIONS? TELL US YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY FROM THIS TIME.

KATELYN LEHNERUniversity of Calgary Dino Football games were something I always looked forward to. I felt like I was back in my comfort zone with a microphone in hand and loved walking out to center field of McMahon Stadium. One of my favourite memories is singing the anthem at the 2016 Dino home opener with over 7,500 people in attendance! As nerve-wracking as that can be, I felt so supported by fellow athletes and friends on the field, and my track teammates in the stands. The sound of the crowd at the end of that anthem was one to remember.

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR SONG WRITING?

YOU OFTEN WILL TAKE SONGS, AND PERFORM REIMAGINED COVERS. YOU ALSO PERFORM ORIGINALS. DO YOU WRITE SONGS BASED OFF OF LIFE EXPERIENCES? ARE YOU INFLUENCED BY ANY OF YOUR MUSIC IDOLS?

KATELYN LEHNER: I get a lot of inspiration by listening to music, specifically by other singer/songwriters. I like see how they go about telling a story, or how they put a unique twist on a song title. I believe that the best songs come from real stories and real emotions. I like to lean into what I’m feeling or experiences that I’ve had. Some of my favourite songwriters are Kelsea Ballerini and Emily Weisband. Their music makes me think of ways to improve as a writer.

HOW DID YOU CONNECT WITH NASHVILLE PRODUCER SHANNON MCARTHUR?

KATELYN LEHNER: After uploading a short cover video of singing and playing the guitar to “Love me like you do” by Ellie Golding, I was contacted by a talent scout for Shannon McArthur, who then got myself and my parents in contact with him. He’s produced artists like Tiffany Alvord and Adam Durtiz and has collaborated with Chase Rice and many others. I was so excited to have my first connection with an industry person out of music city. We had a Skype call together where I was asked to sing for him live. He saw potential in me as an artist and offered to make an EP together. I realized it wasn’t the right timing for me to put out music. I was in the middle of my degree and competing full time. I declined the offer and crossed my fingers that I could have a similar opportunity once I graduated.

YOU TOOK PART IN THE QUARANTUNES LIVESTREAM PRESENTED BY THE GET UP AND COORS EVENT CENTRE.

HOW WAS THAT EXPERIENCE FOR YOU? A LOT OF FANS REALLY ENJOYED GETTING TO KNOW YOUR STORY AND HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR YOUR SOUND.

KATELYN LEHNER: Thankful for the opportunity! I was so happy to be part of the Quarentunes Livestream. The start of self-isolation was a difficult time for everyone. I was really missing being on stage and going out to other live music events in the city. Quarantunes was a great opportunity to play some music and to showcase the local talent here in the city. What made Quarantunes unique is that it wasn’t just about the music, it was about the stories behind it. It was nice to have the audience get to know me personally.

WORTH THE WAIT – WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO RELEASE MUSIC NOW FOR THE WORLD TO HEAR KATELYN LEHNER’S MUSIC? IS MUSIC A CAREER FOR YOU?

KATELYN LEHNER: My final year of university is when I slowly started to get back into music. I knew that when I graduated, I wanted to be in a position where I had my foot in the door with the local music scene so that I could start playing shows and putting out my own songs. The plan for me was always to get through school and complete my 5 years of eligibility as an athlete, and then go after a music career. For me, the wait has been very long but I’m glad the day is finally here! I’m looking forward to what the future has in store!

TELL US ABOUT THE NEW SINGLE “RED”

KATELYN LEHNERWhen imagining what my very first release would be like, I knew that I wanted it to be a fun song that people could dance to. I wrote this song back in 2018 and there was something about it that made me excited. After being approached by Johnny Sinclair and Leslie Stanwyck, and asked if I had any originals, I knew that “Red” was a song I had to show them. They loved the song and saw potential in it. Leslie put her own twist to the music and really made the song come to life! Once “Red” was recorded, it was shown to CCMA award winning producer/engineer Bart McKay. He thought it had a unique sound and compared my vocals on the track to Sheryl Crow (which I thought was a wonderful compliment!). I couldn’t be happier with Bart’s final mix of the song. I knew “Red” would be my debut single to the country music world!

AFTER YEARS OF PERFORMING ON THE STAGE, HOW DOES IT FEEL TO FINALLY HAVE RELEASED YOUR FIRST SINGLE?

KATELYN LEHNERSO GOOD! It feels like it’s been a long time coming. As much as I love performing covers, I couldn’t wait for the day that I’d have my own songs and stories to share. The release day was so special. It was a great feeling to get messages from people and photos of them listening to the song. I am one very happy girl!

“THE BEST SONGS COME FROM REAL STORIES AND EMOTIONS”

– KATELYN LEHNER

NOW THAT WE HAVE “RED”, WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR YOU AS A COUNTRY MUSIC STAR? WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM KATELYN LEHNER IN THE FUTURE?

KATELYN LEHNER: Definitely more music! I have some other singles that I’m really looking forward to releasing, and some brand-new songs that I’m excited to bring to life in the studio. I’m hoping that the live music scene will slowly start to open back up. I am very eager to get back on stage. This Friday October 16th, I will be doing a socially distanced, full band performance at the Capitol Music Club in Saskatoon to celebrate the release of the single. On October 23rd, I will be releasing the Lyric Video for Red, shot and edited by myself and Paul Macalino. Thank you for the support on my debut single “Red!” I am very excited for what’s to come! Thank you Pulse Music Journal, Coors Event Centre and Molson Coors for putting this together and taking the time to talk!
